Islamic Dream Interpretation of Cats and Dogs
Interpretation of Cat in Dreams:
The interpretation of seeing a cat and a dog in a dream is the same because many people keep them in their homes and gardens.
A cat seen in a dream represents a person who defends the family and drives away enemies, as the cat chases away rats, scorpions, and other pests from the house.
A cat in a dream can also symbolize a servant, brother, son, husband, or master.
If someone dreams of a cat dying, it is a sign that the person represented by the cat may either die, fall ill, lose their livelihood, or be separated from a dear friend. It could also mean that a thief will enter their house and steal. The same interpretation applies if a cat is seen in a dream.
Another person shared his dream where a cat entered a house, took some bread, and brought it back to him. He bowed down to it. The interpreter said, “A woman stole something from that house and brought it to you, and you thanked her.”
At times, a cat in a dream can also symbolize fate. One person shared his dream with me where a cat sat in his lap. I interpreted this as a sign that whatever is destined for him will come to him quickly. My evidence for this interpretation was the verse from the Qur’an:
رَبَّنَا عَجِلٌ لَّنَا قِطَنَا (ص16:38)
“O our Lord, hasten for us our fate.”
Interpretation of Seeing a Dog in a Dream:
A dog seen in a dream represents a foolish or mischievous person. However, if one treats the dog kindly, it can turn into a loyal and supportive friend.
Dogs are often associated with loyalty, and so, seeing a dog in a dream may symbolize a loyal servant or friend who is devoted to their master.
Seeing a female dog in a dream represents a bad woman or a corrupt group of people.
A puppy in a dream represents a beloved child in the household.
If the puppy is black, it indicates the dreamer’s control over their home, while a white puppy signifies faith and purity.
If the dog bites the dreamer, it indicates harm or trouble from an enemy, especially if the dog bites clothing or flesh.
A dog in a dream may also symbolize illness.
Seeing a dog from a specific nation refers to the foolish people of that nation and their leadership.
Story of Abu Bakr (رضی اللہ عنہ):
During the journey to Makkah, Abu Bakr (رضی اللہ عنہ) saw a dream in which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions were near Makkah, and a female dog appeared, barking as they approached. When they got close, the dog lay down, and milk started flowing from its teats. This was interpreted as the departure of their enemies and the arrival of good people, who would come to them seeking help and connection.
A shepherd’s dog in a dream represents wealth or resources obtained from a leader or ruler.
A trained dog symbolizes a person who is low or harsh but assists the dreamer in dealing with enemies or in providing livelihood.
Some interpreters suggest that a shepherd’s dog in a dream indicates abundant income and governance, as the dog controls animals like deer.
