Islamic Dream Interpretation of Animals
Interpretations of Seeing Animals in Dreams Extracted from the Masterpiece ‘Hayat al-Hayawan al-Kubra’ by Imam al-Damiri (d. 808 AH), the Renowned Scholar of Zoology.
Human:
Allah Almighty has created humans as a beautiful and magnificent creation. While He has created every animal humble, He has created humans upright and honored them with dignity. Imam Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi al-Maliki (may Allah have mercy on him) states:
“Among all of creation, there is no creature more beautiful than a human, because Allah has made humans alive, knowledgeable, capable, eloquent, hearing, seeing, wise, and intelligent. These qualities are all attributes of Allah. And our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: ‘Indeed, Allah created Adam in His image, meaning in His attributes.’”
If a man appears in a dream and the dreamer recognizes him, it means he is the same person.
If he does not recognize him, then the person represents an enemy.
Seeing an elderly person is a symbol of goodness and blessings.
Seeing a strong person signifies power and a forthcoming good omen, while seeing a woman in a dream symbolizes worldly matters.
Lion:
The lion is a famous predator, often called the king of the jungle. Its face radiates majesty and strength.
If a lion is seen in a dream and it does not notice the dreamer, this indicates that the person will be saved from an enemy.
If the lion notices the person and attacks, but the dreamer escapes, it suggests that the person will face harm from an authority figure, but will eventually be relieved of it.
If the person is sick, this dream indicates recovery, and if the lion attacks and throws the dreamer but does not kill them, it could signify a fever or the experience of imprisonment. Lastly, if someone sees a lion cub in their lap, it signifies that a prosperous child will be born to them.
Wolf:
If a person sees a wolf in their dream, it suggests that they will falsely accuse someone.
The person who is falsely accused will be honorably cleared of the accusation.
If the wolf is seen entering the house, it indicates that the house may face the threat of thieves.
Cheetah:
If a cheetah is seen in a dream, it indicates facing a powerful enemy.
If the dreamer kills the cheetah, it signifies victory over the enemy. Additionally, if the dreamer eats the meat of the cheetah, it is a sign of gaining wealth.
Rhinoceros:
Seeing a rhinoceros in a dream symbolizes a fight or conflict with someone.
Elephant:
Seeing an elephant in a dream is a symbol of longevity and a long life.
Fox:
If a person sees a fox in a dream, it signifies that they will encounter a woman.
Monkey:
Seeing a monkey in a dream represents seeing a person with flaws or defects.
If the dreamer kills the monkey, it indicates that a sick person in the house will recover. However, if the monkey prevails, it means the sick person will not get better.
Cow:
Seeing a cow in a dream is a sign of a famine or scarcity, as interpreted by Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him).
If the cow strikes and causes a wound, it signifies the arrival of an illness.
If an ox attacks, it represents death. If a cow enters the house and digs the ground or the walls, it signifies a loss of wealth.
War Cow:
The esteemed scholar, Allama Damiri (may Allah have mercy on him), did not provide an interpretation for seeing a war cow in a dream. Therefore, no interpretation is mentioned here. It is likely that Allama Damiri considered the war cow to have the same interpretation as the regular cow, treating both as one.
Donkey:
Seeing a donkey in a dream symbolizes an upcoming journey or travel. It may also indicate the arrival of sustenance or a good son.
Dog:
If a dog is seen in a dream and it bites the person, it signifies harm from an enemy or an illness. However, if a hunting dog is seen in the dream, it indicates the arrival of wealth. If the dog tears the clothes, it suggests that a foolish person will gossip about the dreamer. If a dog is seen barking, it signifies a family member will engage in an argument.
Cat:
Seeing a cat in a dream symbolizes a good servant. However, if the cat bites the person, it signifies that the servant will betray or cheat.
There is a famous incident of Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) where a woman came to him and said, “I saw in a dream that a cat inserted its mouth into my husband’s belly and took out a piece of his stomach.”
Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said, “Your husband’s 316 rupees have been stolen.”
The woman was surprised and asked how he knew, and Ibn Sirin replied, “I calculated the number based on the letters of the word ‘Sanwar’ (meaning cat in Arabic). ‘S’ is 60, ‘N’ is 50, ‘W’ is 6, and ‘R’ is 200, which equals 316.”
The woman confirmed that exactly 316 rupees had been stolen, and it turned out to be from her husband’s servant, who admitted to the theft after being questioned.
Rat:
Seeing a rat in a dream is a sign of sustenance, as rats are often found where there is grain (food storage).
Mongoose:
Seeing a mongoose in a dream symbolizes a marriage to a young woman.
Ant:
Seeing ants in a dream symbolizes a large number of children or offspring.
Snake:
Seeing a snake in a dream symbolizes an enemy, a friend, or even a woman who might be an enemy.
If the snake chases the dreamer to bite, it is a sign of an enemy.
If the dreamer catches the snake without fear, it indicates wealth.
If a snake is placed on the bed, it indicates the death of the wife.
If the snake bites the dreamer and the bitten area swells, it signifies the arrival of wealth.
Scorpion:
Seeing a scorpion in a dream signifies encountering a troublesome, quarrelsome person.
Eagle:
Seeing an eagle in a dream signifies victory and success over an enemy.
Vulture:
Seeing a vulture in a dream signifies that the ruler will be angry with the dreamer, and a tyrant will have control over them.
Pigeon:
Seeing a pigeon in a dream signifies the arrival of a friend. Seeing a female pigeon (dove) indicates the arrival of a loving wife.
If a pigeon is seen near the head of a sick person, it signifies the person’s death. Seeing pigeon eggs symbolizes children.
If someone pulls the feathers of a pigeon in the dream, it means the person’s wife will become pregnant or give birth.
Owl:
Seeing an owl in a dream symbolizes a deceitful thief.
Fly:
Seeing a fly in a dream signifies a weak enemy. It can sometimes symbolize a disease that will be treatable and go away. At other times, it indicates involvement in bad deeds.
Honeybee:
Seeing a beehive in a dream signifies the arrival of lawful wealth.
If the dreamer sees honeybees sitting on their head, it indicates the dreamer will receive a high position or authority.
If the dreamer sees themselves feeding honey to others, it signifies that they will impart good words, advice, and Quranic teachings to others.
If someone dreams of wanting honey, it indicates their upcoming marriage.
Crocodile:
Seeing a crocodile in a dream signifies a major enemy.
Turtle:
Seeing a turtle in a dream signifies the arrival of wealth and a woman.
Crab:
Seeing a crab in a dream signifies encountering a deceitful enemy.
Frog:
Seeing a frog in a dream indicates that the dreamer will remain active in the obedience of Allah.
If many frogs are seen, it is a sign of an impending calamity or disaster.
