Interpretation of Forbidden Wild Animals in Dreams

Elephant in Dreams:

The elephant is one of the animals in this category. Seeing an elephant in a dream represents a great ruler or king.

  1. Owning or Riding an Elephant:

    Shihab al-Din al-Qarafi said:

    • If someone dreams of owning or riding an elephant, they will gain the companionship of an influential person.
    • The direction from which the elephant comes indicates the arrival of a servant or follower from that side.
  2. Seeing an Elephant in a Strange Place:

If someone sees an elephant in an unfamiliar city or a place where elephants are not commonly found, especially when they are frightened, it suggests impending destruction or death.

    • This interpretation is derived from the Qur’anic verse:
      • “Have you (O Muhammad) not seen how your Lord dealt with the owners of the elephant?” (Surah Al-Fil: 1)
  3. Elephant as a Symbol of Conveyance and Shelter:

Some interpreters associate the elephant with transport or housing.

  4. Elephant as a Symbol of a Cursed Being:

According to some scholars, the elephant symbolizes a cursed individual because it is considered a deformed or altered creature.

Imam Ibn Sirin’s Interpretation:

  • A person once said to Imam Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him):
    • “I dreamt that I was riding an elephant.”
    • He replied, “Elephants are not ridden by Muslims. I fear that you may abandon Islam and become an apostate.”
  1. Other Interpretations of Riding an Elephant:

Some interpreters believe that riding an elephant in a dream symbolizes becoming a ruler or holding a position of power.

    • However, if the dreamer is not riding the elephant, they may face loss in their life or property.
  2. Striking or Handling an Elephant:

If someone dreams of being struck by an elephant’s trunk, they will acquire great wealth.

    • Carrying the flesh of an elephant has a similar interpretation of acquiring wealth.

    • Holding an elephant by its trunk indicates receiving riches from a king or a ruler.
  3. Death of an Elephant in a City:

If someone sees an elephant dying in a particular city, it signifies the death of a prominent person in that city.
