Islamic Dream Interpretation of Hanging

General Meaning of Being Hanged in a Dream

Dreaming of being hanged on a gallows—especially when the person is exposed, inverted, or bloodied—is considered a negative indication.
However, if the person is hung upright without disgrace, then it symbolizes honor, elevation, and a strong reputation. This is aligned with the verse:

“And they did not kill him, for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself.”
(Surah An-Nisa 4:157–158)

Imam Qatadah’s Dream and Its Interpretation

Imam Qatadah once saw himself hanging from a gallows in a dream.
When he narrated this to Imam Ibn Sirin, he replied: “You are a highly respected person whose words people listen to attentively.” This shows that hanging without humiliation can signify prestige and honor.

During his imprisonment, Imam Shafi‘i dreamed that he was hanging on a gallows alongside Hazrat Ali (RA) above a river.
The interpreters explained that this dream meant:

  • He would attain great recognition

  • His fame would spread widely

  • His status would rise among people

If someone sees themselves already dead and hanging, it indicates gaining fame and status, but through wrongful or questionable means.

If a person dreams that they are killed and then hung, it means they will achieve fame, but people will also falsely accuse them.

If someone dreams of being hanged without knowing when or why, it means that whatever they have lost will return to them.
