Dream Interpretations Related to the Moon

Dreaming about the moon carries interpretations similar to those of the sun, though the moon’s influence is primarily during the night, making its rank inferior to that of the sun. Below are various interpretations of dreams involving the moon:

Moon Descending into the House:

If someone sees the moon descending on their house, it signifies that a long-lost loved one will visit them.

Moon in One’s Lap:

Seeing the moon in one’s lap suggests the person will get married.

Face Reflected in the Moon:

If someone dreams of looking at the moon and seeing their face in it, it is an indication of their death. This interpretation stems from the play on words in Arabic: replacing the letter “Meem” in “Qamar” (moon) with “Ba” forms the word “Qabr” (grave), symbolizing death.

Between the Sun and Moon:

• • A person dreamed they were between the sun and the moon, transferring something from the sun to the moon. Sheikh Shihab al-Din Qarafi explained:
    • You may have two pouches: one for gold coins (symbolized by the sun) and another for silver coins (symbolized by the moon). You exchange gold for silver and place them in their respective pouches.
    • Alternatively, it indicates mediating between two prominent individuals and conveying messages between them.
    • It could also symbolize settling disputes between a creditor and a debtor, taking part of the debt and forgiving the rest.
    • Another possibility is treating your eyes with two different substances, one yellow and one red, akin to applying a balm.
    • The dreamer confirmed all these interpretations. 

King Holding the Sun and Moon:

A king dreamed of holding the sun and moon tied with a thread. Sheikh Qarafi interpreted it as the king having imprisoned two prominent figures, one of whom is a ruler. The king confirmed the accuracy of the interpretation.

Hunter’s Dream of the Sun and Moon:

A hunter dreamed of threading the sun and moon on a string and experiencing pain from one of them. Sheikh Qarafi explained:

• • You caught two crabs at the baths, bound them with a rope, and one of them pinched you.
    The hunter confirmed the interpretation, aligning the sun’s heat and the moon’s bluish spot to the crabs.

Matching Dreams with Different Contexts:

• • A person dreamed of tying the sun and moon with a string. Sheikh Qarafi interpreted it as the dreamer attempting to marry a handsome man to a beautiful woman. The dreamer confirmed this and noted that the man had a slight eye defect.
  • Another dreamer received the interpretation of being a mediator in illicit relationships. The person repented and vowed never to do it again.
  • For another dreamer, Sheikh Qarafi interpreted the sun and moon as a plate or mirror the person had sold, associating the moon’s roundness and brightness with these objects.
  • Yet another dream foretold the death of a close relative, leading to inheritance.

Falling onto the Moon:

• • A gambler dreamed of falling onto the moon and being in distress. Sheikh Qarafi deduced the person’s gambling habit.
  • Another person dreamed the same and was told they would drown, which eventually came true.

Moonlight with Sunlight’s Heat:

Seeing moonlight as hot as sunlight indicates a government official’s promotion. If the people benefited from the heat in the dream, they will benefit from the official; otherwise, they will not.

Eclipses:

• • A solar or lunar eclipse symbolizes the death of important figures, the dismissal of officials, the death of a parent or spouse, unemployment, or the spread of rumours and troubling news.

Sun and Moon Fighting:

A conflict between the sun and moon in a dream indicates a battle, with victory favouring the side represented by the prevailing celestial body.

Time of the Dream:

• • A daytime dream indicates the dominance of truth (symbolized by the sun).
  • A nighttime dream suggests the dominance of falsehood (symbolized by the moon as the ruler of darkness).

Historical Reference:

• • The Second Caliph, Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA), sent a judge to Syria who returned midway. The judge explained that he dreamed of the sun and moon fighting and aligned himself with the moon. Umar (RA) dismissed him, citing the Quranic verse:
    وَجَعَلْنَا الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ ايَتَيْنِ فَمَحَوْنَا آيَةَ الَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً( بني إسرائيل 12:17)
    “And We have made the night and the day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible.”
    Umar (RA) associated the moon with darkness and considered it the ruler of oppressive forces. Later, the judge joined the Syrian army at the Battle of Siffin and was killed while siding with the oppressive faction.

1. Seeing a Crescent Moon Rising

• Symbolism of Arrival:
  • Seeing a crescent moon (the moon from the first seven nights and the last few nights of the month) rising in a dream indicates the arrival of someone long separated from the direction of the crescent’s appearance.
• Pregnancy and Childbirth:
  • If the dreamer’s wife is pregnant, this dream symbolizes the birth of a son.
• Red Crescent:
  • If the crescent appears red, it is a sign of the wife experiencing a miscarriage and indicates demands from creditors.
• Recovery from Illness:
  • The appearance of a crescent moon in a dream also signifies recovery from illness.

• If someone sees the crescent in their dream while others fail to see it despite looking for it, this dream hints at the person’s death, as they alone have seen a heavenly body, symbolizing the Angel of Death.

• Day Crescent:
  • If the crescent rises during the day, it indicates the king’s dominance, as the moon and stars lose their visibility during the sun’s brightness.

• A King’s Dream:
  • A king once dreamt that he was distributing crescents among the people. He narrated this dream to Sheikh Qarafi, who interpreted it:
    “You will prepare for war and distribute bows among the people.”
• Veterinarian’s Dream:
  • Another man dreamt of drinking honey from crescents, and a crescent fell onto his head. Sheikh Qarafi told him:
    “You are a veterinarian, and this is your source of income. One of the animals you treat struck you on the head with its hoof.”
  • The man replied, “You are right.”
  • Here, the Sheikh had compared the hoof to the crescent and the honey to the man’s livelihood.
