Islamic Dream Interpretation of Various Foods and Fruits in Dreams
Interpretation of Khaiz (a sweet made from dates and ghee) in a Dream:
If someone dreams of eating fresh Khaiz, it means they will have an argument with someone and as a result, they will end up in jail.
Interpretation of Eggplant in a Dream:
Seeing out-of-season eggplant in a dream is considered undesirable. Seeing eggplant during its season in a dream indicates hard-to-come-by sustenance.
Interpretation of the Onion in a Dream:
Like other foul-smelling vegetables, onions in dreams typically symbolize unpleasant matters. Some interpreters consider seeing onions in a dream to be a bad omen. Their reasoning is based on the following Quranic verse:
فَادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُخْرِجُ لَنَا مِمَّا تُثْبِتُ الْأَرْضُ
(Al-Baqarah 61:2)
“Pray to your Lord to bring forth from the earth for us its produce.” This verse mentions vegetables, which includes onions. However, those who consider this interpretation also have to categorize all the vegetables and wheat mentioned in the verse as undesirable according to dream interpretation.
Interpretation of Garlic in a Dream:
Seeing garlic in a dream is associated with reproach and blame. If someone dreams of eating cooked garlic, it symbolizes repentance.
The general interpretation of garlic in dreams is that it represents wealth and beneficial gains.
Interpretation of Carrot in a Dream:
Eating a carrot in a dream is a symbol of sorrow. Some interpreters believe that carrots indicate difficulties in tasks or endeavors. The reason for associating carrots with sorrow and grief is that the word “جزَر” (carrot) is phonetically close to “حزن” (sorrow).
Seeing carrots in a dream also signifies obstacles in one’s work, as carrots are quickly consumed or used up.
Interpretation of Radish in a Dream:
Radish in a dream symbolizes lawful sustenance, as its plant produces oil.
If someone sees a radish in their hand in a dream, it suggests that they will engage in an action that will later cause them regret.
Interpretation of Garlic in a Dream:
Seeing garlic in a dream represents a poor reputation. If someone dreams of eating garlic, it suggests they will speak words they will later regret.
Interpretation of Green Vegetables in a Dream:
Green vegetables in a dream are a symbol of sorrow or distress.
One person asked Imam Ibn Sirin (رحمہ اللہ) about a dream where they saw the “Mother of the Believers,” Aisha, with green vegetables growing in their home, admired by people. However, Caliph Abdul Malik ibn Marwan came and uprooted the vegetables. Imam Ibn Sirin explained that if the dream was true, it meant that Abdul Malik ibn Marwan, under the influence of his concern, would command Hajjaj ibn Yusuf to divorce his wife, Asma bint Ja’far ibn Abi Talib. This came true, as Abdul Malik feared that Hajjaj might become inclined toward the Ahl al-Bayt due to his wife, Asma.
Interpretation of Dry Coriander in a Dream:
The dry coriander seen in a dream represents wealth that will help other wealth and prosperity grow.
Interpretation of Fresh Coriander in a Dream:
Fresh coriander in a dream symbolizes a person who is successful in both religion and worldly matters.
If someone dreams that they are picking fruit from a tree other than its own, or if a fruit turns into another type of fruit in the dream, this will have a different interpretation, which we will explain further below.
If someone dreams that they are picking fruit from a tree that is not its own, such as picking dates from a grapevine or carrots from an eggplant or grapevine, the condition of the fruit picked should be considered.
If the fruit is spoiled, rotten, has worms, or is dirty, and the woman in the dream is pregnant, it could symbolize that her pregnancy is unlawful or improper.
One woman told Sheikh Shahabuddin Qurafi that she saw a date tree in her house with fresh dates and black grapes on it. She ate the grapes. Sheikh said, “You have a black slave, and you became attracted to him, resulting in your pregnancy.” The woman replied, “I did not do this intentionally.”
A man narrated a dream to Imam Shahabuddin Quraifi where he saw a pomegranate tree, and he was eating a pomegranate that he had plucked. Alongside that, he was eating another pomegranate with pig hairs on it. Sheikh Quraifi said, “You have a wife in a valid marriage, and another woman who is Christian and whom you have kept without marriage. She is pregnant.” The man replied, “You are correct.”
If the fruit picked is in good condition and provides many benefits, it indicates prosperity and wealth. It may also suggest that the dreamer will progress in their career or profession. For example, if someone dreams of picking dates or figs from a fig tree.
Interpretation of Picking a Low-Quality Fruit:
If someone dreams of picking a lower-quality fruit or something that is not lasting, such as plucking fresh roses from a saffron tree or jasmine from a kismet tree, the interpretation will be the opposite.
If the picked fruit symbolizes a boy, the boy will die young.
If the fruit represents hardship, it indicates that the trouble will soon end.
One person dreamed that they were taking honey from a beehive on a date tree. They told the dream to Imam Shahabuddin Quraifi, who said, “You have received something valuable from an important man or woman.” The person confirmed, “You are right.”
Another person dreamed that they were drinking milk from a grapevine, and it tasted very good. Imam Shahabuddin Quraifi said, “You have received something valuable from a good person, either a cow or a goat.” The person agreed, “You are correct.”
Interpretation for a King:
If a king dreams that they have picked apples from an apricot tree, it means he will impose new taxes on his people that had not been imposed before.
Interpretation for a Sick Person:
If a sick person dreams that they have picked a melon from a watermelon tree, it suggests they will benefit from someone’s prayers or medicine.
